Holidays in the Highlands of Scotland
There are many ways to enjoy a holiday in the Highlands of Scotland from the least expensive - camping and caravanning to the most expensive - full board in a hotel, with bed and breakfast in remote areas often a popular choice. Yet one of the more economical ways of staying in the Scottish Highlands on holiday can often look expensive to start with, that is renting a self-catering cottage.
Let us considering the bed and breakfast option, usually staying in a private home. This can be a non-expensive way of travelling around the Highlands where you pick up bargains such as £30 a night per person. Yet I have often checked out B&B websites and they charge in the region of £90 a room, or £45 per person with single occupancy charges usually higher. So let us take a party of 4 and this works out at £180 a night and over 7 days this will cost you £1,260.
For a hotel this may be even higher at around £120 a night, excluding dinner and for 2 people this will cost you £840, and for four persons around £1680 for a week's holiday accommodation. Depending on the hotel it may cost a lot more than this.
So for bed and breakfast in a private home or in a medium cost hotel a group of 4 people can easily expect to pay between £1,260 and £1680 a week excluding meals.
When browsing cottages online you can often find them available from £400 a week, or more often around £650 to £900 a week at the height of the tourism season. Of course self-catering cottages can be cheaper or more expensive than this and some of the larger houses (or even small castles) can cost several thousands of pounds per week (some even have a cook and cleaner included) it still can work out cheaper if you have a large family or group of friends on holiday together.
